The overall objective of Task 15 is to create an enabling framework to accelerate the penetration and deployment of BIPV products in the global market of renewable energies and in the construction sector, resulting in an equal playing field for BIPV products, BAPV products and regular building envelope components; respecting mandatory, aesthetic, reliability and financial issues.

Expertise

As BIPV is related both to electric technology and construction technology, the approach followed in this Task is based on a value added approach in which BIPV is not only related to PV (covering energy, environmental, and PR aspects) but as well to the building as a whole and to the building industry (covering aesthetics, building energy performance, and multi-functionality of the building envelope). The scope of this Task covers both new and existing buildings, different PV technologies, different applications, as well as scale difference from 1-family dwellings to large-scale BIPV application in offices and utility buildings.

The currently running, third phase of Task 15 started at the beginning of 2024 and runs until the end of 2027 with the following subtasks:

1Subtask A : Challenges and opportunities of BIPV in a de-carbonised and circular economy

This subtask addresses the following objectives: 

  • Help in gaining a comprehensive understanding of the current state of the BIPV market. This includes analysing market size, growth rates, and market trends. By studying the existing market dynamics, researchers can identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities for BIPV deployment in order to define possible targets. Collaboration with Task 1 is foreseen. 
  • Define and clarify the role of BIPV in net Zero Energy Buildings regulations and targets and how can BIPV contribute to and is considered in sustainability labels (e.g. LEED, BREAM, DGNB,
    SNBS, …). This will be done also indetifing  which methods are appropriate to assess the contribution of multifunctional BIPV components and systems capable of providing both the building function and the generation of renewable electricity. Collaboration with Task 12 is foreseen. 
  • Define the social impact of BIPV and how can be measured in the society in order to implement our framework to measure social impact in different regions and countries. 

2Subtask B : BIPV characterization & performance: pre-normative international research

This subtask addresses the following objectives: 

  • Revision and updating of the needs and missing gaps of existing frameworks, using reports published during Phase 1 and Phase 2 as a basis, and proposal of new testing procedures aimed at considering the specifications of BIPV products and systems.  
  • Improve the acceptance of BIPV in relation to fire safety, providing clear information and experience: analyze combined tests & fire safety to provide and appropriate system test. 
  • Improve the characterization of the effect of shading on BIPV facades.  
  • Develop an internationally acceptable test method or approach for assessing outdoor glare from BIPV modules (and building surfaces). 
  • Experimental outdoor testing of the effect of electricity generation on the SHGC/TSET/g value of installed semi-transparent BIPV modules.  In parallel, a round robin of laboratory testing of TSET should be carried out and a theoretical approach suitable for introduction to ISO 15099 should be developed. 
  • Develop guidelines for performance modelling of coloured BIPV.  
  • To contribute to and coordinate the Activity with ongoing standardization initiatives at European/worldwide levels, participating in the discussions, providing inputs and aligning the objectives. 

3Subtask C : BIPV in the digital environment

This subtask addresses the following objectives: 

  • Suggestions for an IFC-standard scheme to represent BIPV-products in open BIM-format considering BIPV product information – product profiles and what properties do the building professionals need during project design, installation, operation and maintenance  
  • Create digital product and high-resolution BIM models of elected buildings and their surroundings in order to conduct simulation of case buildings, based on the digital products and evaluate the performance on energy, economic, indoor environment etc. 
  • Develop and implement a multi-objective optimization framework (design variables, objective functions, constraints and optimization algorithm) to optimize and generate optimal alternative BIPV envelope designs 

4Subtask D : BIPV products, projects and demos: innovation and long-term behaviour

This subtask addresses the following objectives: 

  • Compilation and categorization of existing and innovative/new BIPV technologies, modules, systems and applications with all challenges and opportunities 
  • Monitoring KPIs from pilot BIPV plants as well as their economic performance 
  • Compile data on material stability and durability to identify material incompatibilities for coloured BIPV and to determine the degradation rates of coloured BIPV systems, based on monitored performance data of existing installations. 
  • Lessons learned from on-going evaluation and research on BIPV installation/demonstration projects 

 

5Subtask E : BIPV training, dissemination and stakeholders’ collaboration

The following activities and results are expected: 

  • Collect and analyze existing training models, define needs, missing gaps and goals for professional training and re-skilling in pilot countries represented by task participants 
  • Create an open Image database of projects and solutions, by asking the collaboration of stakeholders (architects, industries, etc.) 
  • Collaborate and support, by coordinating existing projects and initiatives represented by Task participants, in pilot training courses  
  • Collaborate and support, by coordinating existing projects and initiatives represented by Task participants, multi-level strategies and initiatives (relevant conferences, workshops and industry events) to foster the collaboration between the (BI)PV and the construction sectors at national level 
  • Explore links with other programs and Tasks (TCPs, PVPS, SHC,…) to coordinate communication and dissemination actions
